They arrived with four of each of three color combinations (red/green, blue/red, yellow/green) and each whistle was individually packaged in plastic (which I chose to remove before distributing them as party favors, but still appreciated that they were packaged that way).
Modification Guide
1. Start by blowing in the whistle to get a feel for how awful the sound is. If the sound is OK but not great, you may only have to drill the two holes deeper and glue the included dowels back in place.
2. Now take a small piece of 5/16" dowel and carefully punch out the two dowels that are cut and glued in place. Don't hit them too hard as they can go into the cut whistle slots and mess those up.
3. Now use a tool to push them back out the other direction out of the whistle.
4. Mark a 5/16" Bradley point drill bit with some tape so that you are drilling each hole about 1/4" deeper.
5. Put the train in a vise and drill both sides. No drill press is needed as the existing hole is a decent guide for your drill bit.
6. Tap the back of the train with a hammer to clear all the sawdust out and then put the dowels back in and test the sound. Make sure that the down is flush with the back opening of the hole (see my picture). This is the best position to maximize sound.
7. If they sound good to your liking then apply a small drop of super glue down the hole (again see my pictures), then slide them down in place using a small flat head to position it as needed before the glue dries.
8. Do the same for the other side.
9. If it doesn't sound great, then you need to sand down the dowel more. Sand the dowel down to about 1/2 the size of the hold it goes into. Test the dowl and see if it sounds better. If not, you may have an issue with the whistle slots and that train may not be useable.
Check out my video. I play modified trains and one train that was awful out of the box. This way you can get a feel for what they can sound like. Again, these aren't long or wide enough to make a great sound, but they are good for kids.
I gave these two stars because to me they aren't great. Your kids may not notice, but I would rather have them enjoy something instead of getting frustrated.
