Pros;
Works well on the mismatched tracks we have. Strong little engine. Mostly metal construction. Plastic parts are good plastic. Plastic powered wheels have a rubber outter surface that gets amazing traction. It's 4 wheel drive (the center 2 wheels are not powered), with tons of torque. You'll be shock at how hard you'd have to press your finger into the wheel to stall out the motor. Takes 1 AA battery that is accessible with a mini philips screw driver.
Very QUIET compared to my son's Percy engine(different brand). If it's laying on the floor on its side 10 feet away, you can't tell if it's even on.
Easy ON/Off toggle. There is a big rectangular button that is flush with the surface on top of Thomas for ON/OFF - my 2 year old only needed me to show him how to work it once.
Uses rounded magnets for coupling trailers, compatible with Brio etc.
This Thomas engine was able to pull 8 trailers, some with wooden animals in them up over a bridge, so it certainly passes my performance test. I would imagine it could pull many more.
Cons; Battery life. Alot of power driven by 1 AA. Get some rechargeable AAs. Would be nice if it had wireless charging :)
The wheels don't spin freely, because the drive wheels are geared so low. What i mean is.. you cant roll it hardwood floor like a hotwheels car. It wont budge like that. Not a big deal unless a toddler wants to try to push it along the floor/bannister/sofa/wall etc. It works very well, however, when it is powered.
Overall; You really can't go wrong with this engine.
Our son could have pinched his fingers between the moving wheels because he would not simply let the train run on the tracks so now we don't let him play with it. He plays with the talking Thomas and the non-battery-operated Thomas train. We will let him play with his automatic trains again when he is older. He loves the Thomas trains and I do think that Fisher Price toys are generally very durable and safe.
It requires 1 AA battery, which seems to last around 6 hours of continuous use. The solid die-cast construction can withstand the abuse of a hyper-active 3 year old. The push on/off switch can be a little difficult for my 3 year old to operate, a slide switch would have been easier for young children to use.
The battery operated Thomas works find on Thomas brand wooden rails, but it does tend to get hung up on tight corners on non-Thomas wooden rails. Thomas can easily pull 4+ train cars, climb ramps, and works well on and off the track.
Overall happy with Battery-Operated Thomas, my son loves it and I will consider buying him the battery operated Percy next.
The batter operated versions are a bit more expensive than the plain wooden engines, but my son loves that he can watch it move along the track without pushing it.
I think this train would make a wonderful additon to anyone's set.
